When you have developed self-control and discipline, it is possible to shun the bad and run toward the good. When you have a pure heart, i.e. the resulting of self-discipline it often moves you to motivation, positive thinking, love, acceptance and all the good things that will bring you rewards.
Running to badness however will cause decadences to develop, which you will often find you self-pitying you and it will cause you to abandon good habits and behaviors that could have lead you to cultivate natural traits, such as self-control sooner.
We need to develop self-resilience and resistance against the bad and work hard at doing what is good. Since, self-control is a fruitage of the spirit; a part of love, thus one must develop this quality first. We must love our neighbor as self; otherwise, we cannot develop fully one of the fruitages, i.e. self-control.
When you move to cultivate self-control, it often is an uphill venture. This is because external sources will often put us to the test. This is common of people, yet we must thrive harder to cultivate self-control. Once self-control is cultivated the remaining process of self-development moves smoothly.
Self-development is a process and requires patients and acceptance. Since this procedure causes a series of change, one must adapt to change by accepting that change is good in many ways. We must understand the difference amid good and bad change. By recognizing good and bad change, one can work through cultivating self-control and development of self successfully while acknowledging bad changes, consequently stopping it in its track.
Again, we must cultivate love. Love is from the heart, but keep in mind that the heart is deceptive. We want to recognize this because otherwise we may find it harder to achieve our goal, i.e. cultivating self-control.
